What is Resilience?
The meaning of resilience is the ability to adapt to stressful situations, maintain your well-being in the face of adversity and bounce back from hardships both in your personal or professional life.
Resiliency is not a skill you are born with, instead, being resilient is a learned behaviour, an attitude that people of all ages can develop to become more successful in the pursuit of achieving daily tasks or even greatness.

1. Being Self-Aware
People who are resilient understand their current situation, their emotional feelings and the behaviour of others.

2. Accepting The Situation
Accepting defeat or better yet, acknowledging you have suffered a setback sounds simple, yet many so people react with emotion first (a dark mist sets over them when they encounter adversity) which then leads to frustration even worse, a negative mind-set.
People who demonstrate resiliency quickly accept the situation for what it is and channel their thoughts on moving forwards rather than constantly looking back. When understanding what resilience is, the power of acceptance cannot be underestimated.
We have all been guilty of this, however people who continually look back all too often struggle to deal with the present struggles.
3. Survivor vs Victim Mentality
Your attitude and mind-set are the gatekeepers to becoming more resilient. What does this mean?
For example, sports athletes who approach a half-marathon event as the victim will likely re-inforce the same negative messages to themselves;
I have a niggling injury.
I couldn’t sleep very well.
I need rest.
I’ll run next time.
I don’t feel like running today.
I’m just not as good as my competitors.
The end result? They won’t achieve the level of performance they first desired. Their mind-set talked them out of even standing a chance to succeed.
So, what is a survivors mentality?
A survivor is constantly figuring out their next move is, regardless of the barriers and challenges they encounter.
They are problem solvers who concentrate their energy on resolving the issue for a positive outcome rather than dwelling in the past.
Crises and potential set-back are unavoidable, resilient people resort to a tunnel vision approach rather than wasting time and stressing about challenges they can’t control.
This focus takes time and practice; however strong resiliency has been achieved by many who are consistent and persistent in changing their mind-set and attitude.

1. Accept Change
Strive to accept that everything you do won’t be successful, be open to that fact that difficult moment in your journey will arise and you will be tested.
Accepting change is the first building block to becoming more resilient. Focus on the present not the past.
2. Learn New Skills and Take Charge
This can be daunting to begin with. However, change is a part of life and we gain a greatest success when we go out of our comfort zone and succeed within it.
Take charge of your life by developing new hobbies and interests and make time for them!

3. Know Your “WHY”
By utilising the power of why, you are giving yourself purpose and a sense of understanding. When overcoming set-backs, your why will provide you with a clear meaning. Clarity opens up the door to become more mentally stronger.
For example, let’s analyse and compare why vs no why.
How many times have we gained the motivation to workout and train only to stop after a couple of weeks?
For most of us, either our health goal was un-realistic and the very thought of it brought up anxiety, or we didn’t have clear why to begin with.
In this case, whether your why is to lose weight or achieve a performance related goal, make sure its realistic and make steps to achieve it.

4. Balance is Key
Strive for balance in your life. They say you need to be obsessed to be great however choose your time wisely to achieve greater balance and perspective.
5. Resolve Your Conflicts
Attempt to resolve old or current conflict with others. This won’t be easy, but you will gain a sense of peace which is priceless.

A healthy body equals a healthier mind. Look after yourself by training and staying hydrated and eating a balanced diet.
Invest in yourself, otherwise no one else will.
8. Be Realisitc
Don’t be too hard on yourself. Set realistic goals. You feel more confident by setting shorter goals and achieving them. Tasting success more often will only increase your appetite to achieve more.
Give yourself a chance to succeed in the short term and the feel-good factor will present itself.
9. Take Time to Reflect
Following your moments of success, take time to reflect on the hardships you have endured. Self-awareness will help you stay centered on your journey to success.
